Public sector pension schemes

GAD provides actuarial advice to many of the UK public service occupational pension schemes, including schemes for teachers, the National Health Service, and the armed forces.

Our advice is usually provided to the managers of the scheme.  Enquiries about public sector pension schemes from scheme members, the general public or the pensions industry should first be addressed to the relevant scheme’s managers or administrators.  The links page of this website contains links to the websites of the main public sector pension schemes.

We advise government departments on guarantees, or other obligations, in respect of public sector (or formerly public sector) pension schemes.

We also advise governments and public sector organisations in other countries on their public sector pension arrangements.

Unfunded public sector schemes cashflow projections

HM Treasury commissioned GAD to produce projections of cashflows in respect of all UK unfunded public sector pension schemes.  The results of these projections were included in the March 2008 Long-term public finance report, published alongside Budget 2008.

GAD issued a note in December 2009 alongside the Pre-Budget Report 2009 on the methodology, assumptions and data underlying the projections.

Further information

Published reports by GAD in respect of public sector pension schemes, including actuarial valuation reports for the NHS Pension Scheme and the Teachers’ Pension Scheme, are available from The Stationery Office.

Staff transfers

We advise public and private sector organisations on the pensions implications of staff transfers from and to the public sector.  Further information is available in the staff transfers section of our website.
