GAD has completed a review of the methodology for projecting mortality
rates in the national population projections (which are
produced by the department every two years). The review
was carried out as part of the National Statistics Quality
Review programme and was overseen by a steering group which
included academics in the demographic field. Amongst the
topics discussed, the review report considers the data available
for estimating population mortality rates in the UK and
the problem of estimating mortality rates at ages 85 and
over. Alternative methodologies for projecting mortality
are discussed and judged against several criteria, of which
accuracy of the projections was the most important. The
report was published on the National Statistics website
on Friday 14 December 2001 and can be found in the Population
and Migration Theme section of the National Statistics
website, together with a timetable for the implementation
of the recommendations of the review, all of which have
been accepted.
Hard copies of the report are available from National Statistics Direct (+44 (0)1633 812078) or GAD.
