Selection Process
Our selection process is designed to be a two-way experience. We hope that it will enable you to make an informed decision on a future with us, whilst enabling us to select the candidates who best meet our requirements.
There are 3 stages to our application process:
Application form
You will be required to complete GAD’s online application
form which is designed to elicit specific information about
the qualifications you have gained and are studying towards,
your work experience to date, your drive to become an actuary
and your motivation for working in the Government Actuary’s
Department. You will also be asked to complete an achievement
record which asks you to give specific examples of situations
where you have demonstrated certain skills and abilities.
You should note that the questions on the application
form are carefully and precisely worded and that you will
be assessed on how well your responses match the questions.
You should, where possible, avoid giving examples which
all relate to one particular aspect of your experience,
such as work or university. You will be expected to demonstrate
some knowledge of the actuarial profession, to explain
why you wish to become an actuary.
If you are invited to an interview you will
be asked to sign your application form to signify that
all the information provided is true and complete.

Ability Testing
If you pass the application screening, we will invite you to our office in central London to complete a number of ability tests. The tests will take approximately ½ day and will take place between 1st - 5th September 2008. There are three tests; a written test, verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. You will also be asked to complete a personality questionnaire. Lunch will be provided where you’ll be able to meet some of our current trainees. This will be a good opportunity for you to ask them questions about their work and what it’s like to work at GAD. After lunch, one of the trainees will give you a tour of our office.
You should ensure that you provide a telephone number
(not necessarily in the UK) or an e-mail address where
you can be contacted.

Interview
If you pass the application screening and ability tests we will invite you back to our office during w/c 22 September 2008 for interviews with our graduate recruitment team. There will be two interviews, the first will be conducted by an occupational psychologist who will discuss your personality questionnaire, and a second will be a panel interview conducted by an independent assessor and two GAD actuaries.
During the panel interview we will ask you various 'competency based' questions and ask you to provide examples of times when you have demonstrated certain skills and abilities. We suggest you think about the kind of skills and abilities that we might be looking for before the interview and try to come up with examples of situations in which you have demonstrated those skills and abilities. Examples can be drawn from any experience eg university, interests, work experience etc.
If you are successful, there will be some checks on your
nationality and other matters before the Government
Actuary’s Department can make you a formal offer
of appointment. You will be asked to provide documentary
evidence of your qualifications, identity and nationality.
If the checks prove to be unsatisfactory, any offer of
appointment will be withdrawn.
